Pre-Season Blitz Returns

The State Basketball League is excited to announce that it will be holding the Pre-Season Blitz over the Labour Day Long Weekend at the WA Basketball Centre.

After a successful return in 2010, the Blitz has been modified and will see each team play four games over three days in a shortened game format.

In addition to the fourteen SBL Clubs, four Under 18 State Teams will compete to provide strong warm-up games for their Australian Junior Championships in April.

Basketball WA Competitions Manager Christian Rice was excited with the new format.

“The idea of the Pre-Season Blitz is for each team to have competitive games against a mixture of opposition.”

“The feedback from last year was that we had too many games. We had to weigh up quality over quantity and we feel with this format we have found a balance that gets each team an even number of competitive warm-up games.”

The Pre-Season Blitz format for 2011 is:

  • Each team to play four games:
    • Women will play either three finals teams and one non-finals or state team from 2010 or two finals and two non-finals teams.
    • Men will play two finals teams from 2010 and two non-final or state teams.
  • Game Timings:
    • Two 20 minute running clock halves
    • The last three minutes of each half will be full timed
    • No time outs to be called in the last five minutes of each half
    • No overtime will be played

The tournament will run on Friday 4 March, Saturday 5 March and Sunday 6 March to coincide with the BWA Senior Country Week.

“With the Senior Country Week and Blitz being at the WA Basketball Centre we expect to see some strong crowds in the main arena watching SBL” said Rice.

The Pre-Season Blitz is the only weekend that all fourteen SBL Clubs players, coaches, administrators and league officials are in the same place at the same time. This will allow valuable training for referees, score table officials and statisticians while club presidents and staff will meet with league officials to discuss the season ahead.
