Hawks swoop past Stirling

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks have recorded their first win of the 2011 men’s State Basketball League season with a 111- 93 victory over ATD Stirling Senators on Saturday night.

The young Hawks were led by 23-year-old stand in captain Jesse Dixon who recorded 34 points and 11 rebounds, while Anthony Lee had 32 points and 15 rebounds.

Chris Dodd was Stirling’s best with 20 points, eight rebounds and six steals.

The Senators trailed all night but managed to close the lead to one point early in the third period but it was as close as they would get, with the Hawks slowly extending their lead for the remainder of the match.

Perry Lakes coach Dion Dagostino said he was impressed with the performance of his baby Hawks while missing some of their more experienced names but also said improvement is still needed.

“Well we’re missing Joe Allan Tupea, Sam Keen and Ben Purser is still to come back so three of our older guys are due to back, Ben Dixon is 17 and has gone straight from under-18’s to SBL, outstanding,” he said.

“He (Jesse Dixon) is great, last year he had pretty much a year off with injury so he’s been really excited to get back and play and he’s going to be a great leader.

“Our free throw shooting still needs a lot of improvement and working through our offense and knowing where the ball is coming.”

Meanwhile, Perry Lakes’ women also picked up their first win of the season, beating Western Stainless Stirling Senators 58-48.

The two sides were tied at the final interview and Stirling even led last year’s Grand Finalists late in the third period, but the Hawks came back to break their two-game losing streak.

Tegan Walker continued her impressive season for Perry Lakes with 17 points, while Rachel Watman top-scored with 22 points for Stirling.

Stirling's men and women will be out to record their first win of the season when they take on Willetton Tigers on Friday, while Perry Lakes’ men face a journey to the Goldfields on Saturday.
