Suns hoping to shine on Redbacks (Round Three WSBL Preview)

Kalamunda Eastern Suns face a tough test as they try to maintain their unbeaten record when they host Perth Redbacks in round three of the women’s State Basketball League.

The Suns finished three games outside the top eight last year but have won their opening two matches and sit in second spot on the back of impressive performances from Chelsea Armstrong and Melissa Moyle, who are both averaging 14 points per game.

But Redbacks front court duo Marita Payne and Brooke Hiddlestone were outstanding form in their side’s two victories last weekend and should again ensure last year’s semi-finalists put up a strong fight.

Perth also faces Western Stainless Stirling Senators, who have lost both of their two matches so far by 10 points.

Rockingham Flames and Australian Central East Perth Eagles will be looking to register their first victories of the season when they meet on Saturday.

The two sides finished second and fifth respectively last year, but both are 0-1 after losing in week one and having the bye last week.

The Flames also play South Metropolitan rivals Mandurah Magic, who will be hoping to bounce back from a 17-point loss to defending champions Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers last week.

Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves have won their first two matches and will be hoping to continue their good start when they meet Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars and East Perth.

The Cougars, who have five players averaging at least 10 points per game, won in round one before pushing Willetton last week in a 68-61 loss, and should provide a tough challenge.

All-Star Mandurah guard Casey Mihovilovich has averaged 22 points per game this season and will need to continue her outstanding form to get the 2009 Grand Finalists past Cockburn on Sunday.

Willetton is top of the league and will be out to continue its perfect start when it meets Stirling and Lakeside Lightning.

The Tigers won have won their first three matches by an average of 16.3 points and should be too good for the Senators and the last-placed Lightning (0-3).
