Lay hopes to spark Buccs

MICHAEL Lay hopes to ignite a winning run at Tip Top Stadium tomorrow night when the Sun City Plumbing Buccaneers host South West Slammers.

Pending a late clearance yesterday, the American will spearhead the Buccs’ starting five, along with fellow import Todd Brown who is set to make his SBL debut.

Brown completed a full training session with the Buccs on Wednesday night.

The swingman is nearing full fitness and looks to have shaken off the shoulderinjury which kept him out for the first two rounds of the season.

After three losses, Lay said the camp was determined to open its account, now that its key personnel were back on deck.

“Everyone is excited, this is the first time the whole team will be together, so it should be an indication of things to change,” he said.

“Having those three losses kind of ignited a fire, especially now that we have everyone back.”

The point guard rejoins the Buccs for a third stint following a disappointing season with relegated German club Konstanz.

“It was very disappointing in Germany,” Lay said.

“We lost a lot of games and I kind of forgot what that winning feeling was like. I’m looking forward to accomplishing that feeling here.”

South West, which went down to Kalamunda 95-81 last week, are also yet to get off the mark.

New imports Nick Freer - a player the Buccs looked to sign last year - and Matthew Smith carried the brunt of the Slammers’ tally with 24 points each.

Speaking to the Guardian sister paper, the South West Times, Slammers coach Carl Catalano was confident his team could upset the home side.

“Going up there and playing them when they’re 0 and 3 is prime,” he said.

The Buccs conceded 26 turnovers to the Rockingham Flames, going down 99-91 last Saturday.

Lay expected a stern test against the Slammers, but believed a reduction in turnovers should allow then Buccs to prevail.

“The country clash is always one people get riled up for, it’s a high intense game,” he said.

“I think if we execute and cut down on our turnovers that will give us a good chance.”
