Buccs dunk Slammers (Geraldton Guardian)

IMPORTS Todd Brown and Michael Lay shone on debut on Saturday, leading a 100-67 demolition of the South West Slammers at Tip Top Stadium.

The emphatic win turned the tide for the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers, who had come into the game winless this season.

The South West had no answers for the Americans, as Lay scored 15 points and dished out 10 assists, while Brown netted 30 points to go with his five rebounds.

The Buccs jumped out to a 26-15 lead at the first change.

South West Import Nick Freer kept his side within double digits in the early stages of the second quarter.

Freer finished the game with 21 points but could do nothing to halt the third quarter barrage from the home side.

The Buccs outscored their opponents 30-14 in the third to take an unassailable 78-50 lead into three-quarter time.

Brown, who returned from a shoulder injury, said he was glad to finally get off the bench.

“It feels great to get out on the court and play with the guys. We had a good groove going tonight,” Brown said.

“It was big that we got this win before a few harder games coming up.

“Hopefully we can work on a few things that we did not do so well tonight and come out that much stronger next week.”

Brown said it was a lot of fun playing with Lay, who arrived in Geraldton last Tuesday.

“I told Michael during the game I really like playing with him,” he said.

Lay spent more than 38 minutes on court in his return to Tip Top Stadium and said the heat took its toll.

“It was really, really hot. In Germany it is cold. A couple times my leg started to cramp up, but in the next few weeks I think my body will adapt,” he said.

“The chemistry we have in the team is really good and guys were able to implement what we were trying to do.

“It is a different team to the last time I was here but we are hoping to build momentum and string some wins together.”
