Resurgent Buccs out to take bite of Wolves (Round Four MSBL Preview)

Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers will be out to continue their resurgence when they host Wanneroo Wolves in round four of the men’s State Basketball League.

The Buccaneers welcomed new imports Michael Lay and Todd Brown into their side last week and the American duo was able to help them register their first win of the season, a 100-67 thrashing of Southwest Slammers, which broke a three-game losing streak.

But the fifth placed Wolves, who broke a two-match losing skid with victory over Australian Central East Perth Eagles on Sunday, should provide a tougher test for last year’s semi-finalists.

Reigning runner-up Lakeside Lightning suffered their first loss of the season to defending champions Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers on Saturday and will be desperate to bounce back when they host East Perth.

The Lightning were without star forward Ben Beran against the Tigers and will need him back to help limit East Perth’s inside game, led by Wildcats training squad member Tom Jervis.

The Eagles also host ATD Stirling Senators, who upset Willetton last Friday for their first win of the season.

SKILLED Goldfields Giants will be looking to continue their good form when they host Mandurah Magic.

The Giants lost their opening two games of the season but have won their last two and should be too good for the struggling Magic.

Perth Redbacks moved into the top two with a pair of wins last week and will be looking to maintain that form against Rockingham Flames.

The Flames suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday and face a tricky challenge against a Perth side which welcomed back NBL guard Joel Wagner last week.

Cockburn Cougars have been the big improvers this season but their unbeaten record faces a tough test when they host Kalamunda Eastern Suns, who will be keen to bounce back from last week’s loss to Perth.

The Suns also host Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks, who will be looking to improve on their 1-3 record.

Southwest play Willetton and Perry Lakes and is likely to face its tough doubleheader without star forward Trent Worthington, who suffered a knee injury against the Buccaneers.
