Hawks, Suns face blockbuster clash (Round Four WSBL Preview)

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks and Kalamunda Eastern Suns have the chance to boost their women’s State Basketball League title credentials when the two sides meet on Friday.

The Suns have shown they could be the big improvers from last season with three wins from their first three games, while the Hawks made last year’s Grand Final and are expected to be among the championship contenders again.

But Perry Lakes have been inconsistent early in the season and will be desperate to bounce back with wins over the Suns and Southwest Slammers.

Suns import Leah Rush had 23 points and 12 rebounds in her debut for her new side last week and the Suns will need her to continue her outstanding form to beat the Hawks and Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars.

Cockburn has made a solid 2-2 start to the season and should be a difficult matchup for Kalamunda.

Perth Redbacks will be desperate to break a two-game losing streak when they host Rockingham Flames on Saturday.

The Flames finished second last year but have struggled to a 0-3 record after suffering several key injuries before the season began, but will be hopeful of causing an upset against last year’s semi-finalists.

Western Stainless Stirling Senators claimed a major scalp when they beat Perth last week and will be hoping to cause another shock when they host Australian Central East Perth Eagles.

The Eagles, who finished fifth last season, have been slightly disappointing with a 1-2 record this year, but will still be heavily favoured against the Senators, who finished 11th in 2010.

East Perth also meets Lakeside Lightning, who remain winless from their first four games despite qualifying for the finals last year.

Defending champions Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers will be looking to continue their impressive start to the season when they travel to Bunbury to play the Slammers on Friday.

Willetton has cruised to victory in all five of its games this year, despite the absence of West Coast Waves centre Zoe Harper, and should be good enough to get past Southwest, which lost its most recent match by 29 points.
