Beran out for two months with back injury

Lakeside Lightning’s men’s State Basketball League title hopes have been dealt a major blow after star forward Ben Beran was ruled out for a large part of the season with a back injury.

The 26-year-old import played an integral part of the Lakeside team which made it to last year’s Grand Final, averaging 26.6 points per game for the season, but the Lightning will have to do without him for a prolonged stint in 2011.

“I think he will be out for at least two months," Lakeside coach Andy Stewart said.

Beran, who attended South Dakota State University, had started this season in outstanding form.

The Iowa native averaged 31.7 points and 10 rebounds per game through the first two rounds of the year and claimed the PowerPlayer of the Week award for week two before injury ruled him out of Lakeside’s round three clash against Willetton.

But Stewart said he was confident young forwards Tom Parkinson and Simon Lokan would be able to fill the void while Beran was unavailable.

“Our back-up bigs, who are now obviously playing a lot of minutes, are coming out and starting to play well, which is really pleasing,” he said.
