Hawks swoop for win over Kalamunda (Friday Night Wrap)

Perry Lakes Hawks have put a disappointing start to the season behind them to post an important 92-74 victory over Kalamunda Eastern Suns in the men’s State Basketball League.

The Hawks suffered defeats in three of their first four games but bounced back thanks to new import Andy Burns, who had 19 points in a victory which saw last year’s quarter-finalists improve to 2-3, level with eighth placed side East Perth Eagles.

Cedric Crawford had 15 points to lead the Suns, who dropped out of the top eight with their second straight loss.

Lakeside Lightning overcame the absence of star forward Ben Beran to record a 118-97 victory over East Perth.

Beran was ruled out for up to two months with a back injury and his absence proved too much in Lakeside’s loss to Willetton Tigers last week, but fellow import Luke Payne’s 35 points ensured it would be a different story against the Eagles.

Centre Tom Jervis had 21 points and 10 rebounds for East Perth, but it wasn’t enough for his side to avoid its second straight loss.

Defending champions Willetton picked up its second straight win, a comfortable 93-81 triumph over Southwest Slammers.

The Tigers had lost three of their first four games before beating the Lightning last Saturday and continued that momentum thanks to new import Robert Kampman (35 points).

Nick Freer had 26 points for the Slammers, who fell to 0-4 with the loss.

In women’s action, 2011 runner-up Perry Lakes beat Kalamunda 72-60, ending the Suns’ three-game unbeaten run to start the season.

Elsewhere, East Perth survived a late scare to hold on for a 60-55 victory over the winless Lightning, while Melissa Marsh had 29 points to lead defending champions Willetton to an 83-58 thrashing of the Slammers.
