Senators hand East Perth third straight loss

The ATD Stirling Senators have continued the Australian Central East Perth Eagles poor men’s State Basketball League form with an upset 107 – 99 victory.

East Perth’s third straight loss saw it slip out of the top eight and fall to a 2-4 record, while the Senators improved to 2-3 with their second victory over one of last year’s top eight in two weeks.

The standouts for Stirling were William Foster with 24 points and 10 rebounds, Austin Bruton with 25 points and Michael Jones with 24 points.

East Perth’s best were Colin Matteson with 27 points and Tom Jervis with 14 points and 22 rebounds in a game which was a milestone for veteran Andrew McLennan.

McLennan was presented with an achievement award before the game by Basketball WA Executive Kevin Wigg for reaching 350 SBL games.

The first quarter was played at a frenetic pace, with several lead changes. Neither team held a lead greater than four points as East Perth went to the break leading 26 – 25.

It was just as tight in the second quarter as it was before quarter-time, but the Senators went to half-time with a 46-43 lead.

The third quarter went all Stirling’s way, seeing them have a 12 point buffer with two minutes left to play before the break. They finished ahead 70-61.

The Senators led by as many as 16 points in the final period but East Perth would not lie down and put in a spirited effort to close the gap to as little as six points before going down by eight.

Stirling Head Coach Don Jamieson was pleased with his teams endeavour and commitment.

He said the win was a credit to the way the team had formulated and stuck to their game plan.

In the women’s game the Eagles defeated the Western Stainless Stirling Senators 82 – 52.

The teams traded baskets early on until Eagle Elizabeth Cooke injured her back taking a courageous charge. This sparked the Eagles and they took a 23 – 13 lead into the first break.

But Cooke’s injury prevented her from taking any further part in the game and may rule her out of next week’s game also.

The Eagles continued to build their lead in the second quarter and took a 45 – 21 advantage into the half time break.

The Eagles built on this lead to be up 63 – 33 at the last change and would not relinquish this lead, no matter the intensity of Stirling’s effort and attack.

The Eagles best were Denielle Lipscombe with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Nicole Jorre St Jorre with 11 points and six assists. Stirling’s standouts were Rachel Watman with 18 points and eight assists and Michelle Joy with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
