Hawks and Cougars brush aside Suns (Round Four WSBL Wrap)

Kalamunda Eastern Suns’ impressive start to the women’s State Basketball League season came to a halt with losses to Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks and Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars.

The Suns had won their first three games but fell 72-60 to the Hawks on Friday and 73-64 to Cockburn on Saturday, a pair of results which saw them fall to sixth spot.

Emma Pass scored 22 points and Courtney Hargreaves had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Cougars past the Suns for their third victory of the season, while Tanya Kelly had 21 points to lead the Hawks to their win against Kalamunda.

Perry Lakes made it three straight wins with a comfortable 78-59 win over Southwest Slammers on Saturday.

Belinda O’Halloran top-scored for last year’s runner-up with 14 points, while Lavesa Glover had 14 points for the Slammers, who have lost three straight after also losing 83-58 to Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers on Friday.

The Tigers have won six consecutive matches to start the season and already have a three win lead over the next highest team after they stormed out to a 30-point half-time lead and were never challenged from there.

Melissa Marsh was the star for Willetton with 29 points, while Glover had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Southwest.

Australian Central East Perth Eagles moved into the top four with victories over Lakeside Lightning and Western Stainless Stirling Senators.

The Eagles survived a late scare to beat Lakeside 60-55 on Friday, led by West Coast Waves forward Samantha Norwood (20 points and 11 rebounds), which saw the Lightning remain winless after five games.

And Norwood had 16 points to help East Perth thrash the Senators 82-52 on Saturday, which left Stirling struggling at 1-4 in 10th spot.

Perth Redbacks ended a two-game losing streak with a 77-45 thrashing of Rockingham Flames.

The Redbacks overcame the absence of star centre Marita Payne to post the comfortable victory, thanks to strong performances from Jessica Jakens (18 points).

The Flames, who finished second last year, are winless from four games this season and bottom of the league.
