Giants too strong for Magic (Round Four MSBL Wrap)

SKILLED Goldfields Giants continued their revival with a 92-87 victory over Mandurah Magic in round four of the men’s State Basketball League.

The Giants lost their first two games but have won their last three to move up to sixth position after Darnell Dialls led them past the Magic with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Import Taylor Mullenax had 20 points in his first game of the season for Mandurah, but it wasn’t enough for his side to avoid its fourth consecutive loss.

Rockingham Flames caused a significant upset with a 109-99 road win against Perth Redbacks.

The Redbacks had won two straight and were boosted by the return of NBL point guard Joel Wagner last week, but couldn’t avoid their second home loss of the year.

Rhett Della Maddalena had 27 points in Rockingham’s fourth victory, which saw it finish the round in third spot, while Adrian Majstrovich scored 32 points for the Redbacks.

ATD Stirling Senators also caused a shock with a 107-99 victory over Australian Central East Perth Eagles.

Austin Bruton continued his impressive form with 25 points in Stirling’s second win of the year.

East Perth also lost 118-97 to Lakeside Lightning on Friday, despite the best efforts of Tom Jervis (21 points).

Luke Payne had 35 points to lead Lakeside in the absence of star American forward Ben Beran, who has been ruled out for two months with a back injury.

Wanneroo Wolves beat Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers 92-83 to move back into the top four, led by Seb Salinas (32 points).

The Buccaneers, who were just one win away from last year’s Grand Final, are struggling in 12th position at 1-4.

Cockburn Cougars improved to 6-0 and remained on top of the ladder after Stanley Ocitti (22 points) led his side to a 115-77 triumph over Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

The Suns also lost 92-74 to Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks, who moved into the top eight with that win and their 95-77 victory against Southwest Slammers.

Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers cruised to their second straight win, a 93-81 success over the winless Slammers.
