Evans demands more

RAY Evans has called for more grit from the Sun City Plumbing Buccaneers after they were handed a fourth defeat in five games by the Wanneroo Wolves on Saturday.

The Buccs coach questioned his players’ attitudes and decision- making in the 92-83 defeat at Tip Top Stadium.

“Some of our decision-making wasn’t very good. We took some bad shots and our body language at times wasn’t good either,” he said.

“We looked to turn around and blame each other for certain things that happened on the court. I let them know after the game that’s not acceptable.

“We’ve got to handle situations and toughen up as players.”

With a big game at home against defending champion Willetton this Saturday, Evans needs his big guns to deliver to help turn around one of their worst ever starts to a season.

“We had too many players down on form tonight and not playing with very much confidence,” Evans said.

The Buccs appeared to give Wolves high scorer Seb Salinas (32 points) a ticket to roam.

He landed the killer blow with two perimeter shots in a clinical fourth quarter for the Wolfpack.

This was after a Michael Lay (25 points) three-pointer got the home side to within a point on the third-quarter buzzer.

The Wolves kept the pressure on imports Todd Brown and Lay to unsettle the Buccs, the former limited to just nine points.

Ben Pepper (27 points) looked to have had the Buccs on their way by half-time, as the home side led by three points.

But in a turnover-riddled third quarter for the Buccs, Wolf Matthew Schmechtig bombed in a three-pointer six minutes in. It gave his side the lead, which they then held.

Further frustration set in for the Geraldton camp when captain Matt Wundenberg was fouled out in the fourth quarter, followed by Aaron Ralph.

The Wolves turned up their press and with it came a nine point lead which carried them home to their fourth win of the SBL season.
