Mandurah out to take bite from Wolfpack (Round Five WSBL Preview)

Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves and Mandurah Magic will be looking to strengthen their women’s State Basketball League title credentials and continue their good form when they play on Saturday.

The Wolves and Magic have both started the season 3-1, which sees them sit second and third respectively, trailing defending champions Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers.

Mandurah has only lost to the Tigers this season and could boost its title hopes with a victory over a fellow contender, while the Wolves will be looking to claim another big scalp after defeating 2010 runner-up Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks a few weeks ago.

Wanneroo also plays Kalamunda Eastern Suns, who won their first three games but suffered two losses last weekend in the absence of head coach Craig Mansfield.

And Mansfield will again be missing for his side’s crucial clash with the Wolves due to his commitments at the Under 18 Australian Junior Championships.

Rockingham has limped to a 0-4 start to the season and will be desperate to bounce back with a win over Western Stainless Stirling Senators, who are also struggling at 1-4 and will be without head coach Vlad Alava.

But the Flames' home fixture against Kalamunda, which had been scheduled for Friday, was postponed to a later round.

Perry Lakes will be looking to continue its three-game winning streak when it hosts Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars on Saturday.

The Hawks showed off their good form last week with comfortable wins over Kalamunda and Southwest Slammers but should face a tougher test in a Cockburn side which hasn’t lost at home this season.

The Cougars claimed just six victories year but have won three of their first five during this campaign, thanks largely to the good form of English star Emma Pass, who has averaged 14 points per game this season.

Perth Redbacks, who improved to 3-3 with a comfortable win over Rockingham last week, will be looking to consolidate their top eight spot with victory over the Slammers on Friday.

The Slammers have lost three straight games and will need to improve significantly to upset the Redbacks or Australian Central East Perth Eagles, who have won three of their last four games.
