Cougars run out of bite (Round Five MSBL Wrap)

Cockburn Cougars have seen their unbeaten start to the men's State Basketball League season come to an end with a 94-90 loss to Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks.

The Cougars had won their first six games but star Perry Lakes import Anthony Lee had 36 points and 10 rebounds to lead his side to its upset victory.

The result saw the Hawks move up to sixth spot with their third straight win, while Cockburn remained in top spot despite the loss.

But Lakeside Lightning maintained the pressure on the Cougars with an improbable 88-81 win at SKILLED Goldfields Giants.

The Lightning were without star duo Jarrad Prue and Ben Beran and trailed by 20 points in the third quarter, but Luke Payne (38 points) led last year's runner-up to their fifth win of the year. Matthew Rosinski had 18 points for the Giants.

Wanneroo Wolves moved into second spot with victories against Mandurah Magic and Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

The Wolves continued Mandurah's miserable streak, which has seen it lose five straight games, thanks to Wildcats development player Greg Hire's 29 points.

And fellow big man John Vaudreuil had 26 points to lead Wanneroo to its 122-88 thrashing of the Suns, who fell to 12th spot with their fourth straight loss.

Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers snatched a thrilling 77-74 win against defending champions Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers.

Aaron Ralph's three-pointer in the dying seconds led Geraldton to just its second win from six games this season, while the defeat left the Tigers struggling in 10th spot with a 3-4 record.

ATD Stirling Senators upset Rockingham Flames 111-106 to move into the top eight with their third win from their last four games.

The Flames slipped out of the top four with their second defeat from three games despite Jerel Allen's 35 points.

Veteran Ryan Neill had 42 points to help Perth Redbacks climb into the top four with a 113-103 victory against Southwest Slammers.

The winless Slammers also fell 115-98 to Australian Central East Perth Eagles, who broke their three-game losing streak to improve to 3-4.

Rockingham's Friday match against Kalamunda was postponed as no suitable venue was available.
