Giants storm past Flames, Redbacks (Round Six MSBL Wrap)

SKILLED Goldfields Giants have propelled themselves into the men's State Basketball League top four with round six victories over Rockingham Flames and Perth Redbacks.

The Giants beat Rockingham 92-88 on Friday and 2010 semi-finalists Perth 99-89 on Saturday, meaning they've won five of their last six games to improve to a 5-3 record.

But the Flames' third loss from four outings saw them fall to sixth spot, while the Redbacks dropped out of the top four following their defeats to the Giants and Cockburn Cougars.

League leaders Cockburn bounced back from its opening loss of the season last week with a 109-99 win over the Redbacks, led by Ty Harrelson (22 points and eight assists).

Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers climbed into the top eight with a 100-88 victory against Wanneroo Wolves.

Wanneroo's loss saw it drop out of the top two, while Robert Kampman's 30 points led the defending champions to their third win from four outings.

Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers completed a successful road-trip with a 78-76 win against Kalamunda Eastern Suns and a 95-79 triumph over Australian Central East Perth Eagles.

Michael Lay had 29 points, including the game-winning basket in the final seconds, against the Suns, who slumped to their fifth straight loss, while Ben Pepper's 34 points led Geraldton past East Perth.

But the Eagles beat Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks 100-89, led by Tom Jervis (31 points), to remain close to the top eight with a 4-5 record, while also ending the Hawks' three-game winning streak.

Lakeside Lightning stayed within one win of top spot with their 109-101 victory against ATD Stirling Senators.

Luke Payne had 34 points and Ryan Sofoulis added 25 in Lakeside's third consecutive win, while Lee Roberts' 33 points weren't enough for the Senators to avoid their first in three games.

Mandurah Magic climbed out of the top two after beating local rivals Southwest Slammers 92-76.

Tom Remmerswaal scored 24 points to help Mandurah break its five-game losing streak and claim its second win, while the Slammers remain winless despite the best efforts of Tyler Hickert (15 points).
