Blake Smith fined & suspended by SBL

The State Basketball League has fined and suspended Perth Redbacks player Blake Smith in relation to an incident at the Perth Redbacks versus Goldfields Giants game on Saturday 23 April at Belmont Oasis.

Smith was fined $500 and suspended for two games for unsportsmanlike conduct and bringing the game into disrepute.

Feedback was provided from the match officials following an incident on a fast break that saw Smith hit and break a window at the end of the playing court at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre.

The incident was seen by the league as being extremely serious and could have resulted in serious injury to the player and others around him. In addition, the incident happened on court in front of spectators and promotes the league in a negative way.

The suspension part of Smiths penalty can only be served when he is deemed fit to play by medical staff after sustaining an injury in the incident.

“This is a reminder for all players and coaches that their behaviour must reflect on the league and their clubs in a positive way at all times” said Competitions Manager Christian Rice.

“Additionally these sorts of incidents do not set a strong example for junior club players watching their senior teams play.”

The Perth Redbacks will host the Kalamunda Eastern Suns tonight in what is expected to be a thrilling contest with former Eastern Suns star Adrian Majstrovich now suiting up for the Perth Redbacks.
