Hawks send a message with upset of Lightning

Lakeside Lightning’s five-game winning streak has ended at the hands of a Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks side that has proven itself as a genuine men’s State Basketball League title contender.

The Hawks delivered a 92-85 upset over the Lightning at the WA Basketball Centre on Saturday, one night after a 107-102 comeback win over close rivals Wanneroo Wolves.

Perry Lakes jumped out to a six-point lead at quarter time and dominated to take a 16-point break into the main change.

However, Lakeside closed the gap to 10 points at three quarter time.

Both sides traded three-pointers early in the fourth term and Lakeside closed to one point before the Hawks extended their lead back out to seven points with three minutes remaining.

Luke Payne led the scoring with 30 points while Anthony Lee had 28 for the Hawks.

Perry Lakes coach Dion Dagostino said he was happy for his side to carry the underdog tag.

“Everyone always underestimates us, they always call us young and tonight we just outran them got up and down the floor and did a fantastic job," he said.

“Last night we were down by 23 and came back and won so they guys were exhausted but yeah it was huge.

“At half time we (the coaching staff) pretty much abused them and got into them, they were shooting 20 per cent and we were shooting 60 per cent and that wasn’t going to happen again so we knew it was going to turn…. we expected it.

“Everyone’s getting involved and doing their jobs, it’s great to see.”

Earlier in the night, the Perry Lakes women won 68-53, with a dominant 21-6 first period setting up their victory.

Lakeside's Emily Fielding and Heidi McNeil both had 15 points while Tegan Walker led the Hawks with 14.

The Hawks will face Willetton and Cockburn in round nine. Lakeside come up against East Perth and Goldfields.
