SBL holds first referee workshop

The State Basketball League recently held its first workshop for all referees and referee coaches in a continued effort to improve the development of officials and the league.

The off-season saw an overhaul of the referee structure to ensure that referees and referee coaches were being well supported by the league. The league also streamlined processes in an attempt to improve consistency of referees.

Wildcats Assistant Coach and SBL Coach of the Year Andy Stewart along with fellow Wildcats Assistant Coach Shawn Dennis were invited to participate in the workshop, with the main theme being communication between referees and players/coaches.

Leading SBL Official and former SBL Referee of the Year David Bull addressed the group on the key elements involved in effective communication.

Constructive conversation was had between the officiating group and the coaching group on the importance of effective communication.

“These workshops are designed as team building exercises for our referees as well as education nights” said Competitions Manager Christian Rice.

“Workshops such as these are vital for the continued development of our officials.”

“Players and Coaches work on their skill set regularly and our referees and referee coaches need to be supported to improve their skill set as well.”

The night was hailed as a success by all involved, with the referees gaining an understanding of why communication is important to becoming a top level referee.

The SBL is looking to hold workshops on a monthly basis during the season where a main theme will be discussed along with other key information for SBL Referees.
