Cockburn too hot for Flames (Friday Night Wrap)

Cockburn Cougars strengthened their grip on their spot in the men's State Basketball League top two with a comfortable 79-52 victory against Rockingham Flames.

The Cougars' fourth win from their last five games and 11th from 14 matches this season ensured they would finish round 10 in at least second spot, while Rockingham's eighth loss from nine games dealt a serious blow to their finals hopes.

Veteran guard Grant Davey set up Cockburn's win with 17 first-quarter points to help his side take a 32-11 lead at the first break and they were never challenged from there.

Davey finished with 26 points for the Cougars, while import Kent Tribbett (20 points and 11 rebounds) was the Flames' top performer.

Wanneroo Wolves consolidated their top four spot as they cruised to a 110-84 win over bottom side Southwest Slammers.

Perth Wildcats development player Greg Hire had 23 points while fellow big man John Vaudreuil added 21 to help Wanneroo to its third straight win.

The Wolves sit in third spot after winning their 10th game of the season, which sees them sit just behind top two sides Lakeside and Cockburn.

Nick Freer top-scored for the Slammers with 25 points, but his side is still without a win this season.

In women's action, Wanneroo bounced back from a disappointing run of form to thrash Southwest 87-38.

The Wolves had lost four of their last five coming into the match but Amy Kidner had 16 points to help her side cruise to victory and hand the Slammers their 10th consecutive loss.

And Cockburn helped consolidate their spot in the top eight with a comfortable 88-47 win against the last placed Flames.

Sisters Kara and Courtney Hargreaves (24 and 19 points respectively) lifted the Cougars to their third victory from four games.
