Lightning strike another blow for Buccs (Saturday Night Wrap)

Lakeside Lightning consolidated top spot on the men’s State Basketball League ladder with a dominant 102-73 win over Geraldton Buccaneers on Saturday.

The win is the Lightning’s third straight, while Geraldton slumped to 13th spot with its fifth consecutive loss.

Lakeside led by 16 points at half-time before it took control of the match with a 24-12 third period.

Luke Payne (34 points), Ben Beran (16) and Jarrad Prue (14 rebounds) were Lakeside’s leaders while Michael Lay had 22 points for the Buccs', who appear likely to miss the top eight for only the second time.

East Perth Eagles ended Perry Lakes’ five-game winning streak with a 95-86 upset.

The sides were tied at the first two intervals, with Perry Lakes taking a two-point lead into the final quarter, before being outscored 18-7 to fall to the shock loss.

Wildcat Drew Williamson (37 points) led the Eagles while Anthony Lee was the Hawks’ highest scorer with 27.

Wanneroo ensured they would remain in touch with Lakeside and Cockburn at the top after they handed Kalamunda a 101-80 defeat.

John Vaudreuil had 22 points and six rebounds and Greg Hire had 19 points added 18 rebounds.

Reigning premiers Willetton Tigers thumped South West Slammers 105-77.

Robert Kampman had a game-high 41 points for the Tigers, while Matt Knight added 22 points and seven rebounds in his return from holiday.

Perth Redbacks' disappointing form continued with a 101-95 loss to Mandurah Magic, who moved within one game of the top eight.

Goldfield Giants stayed within reach of the top four after they beat Stirling Senators 100-97.

In women’s matches, Willetton defeated the Slammers 87-57, Wanneroo accounted for Kalamunda 87-71, Mandurah Magic beat East Perth 82-70, while Perry Lakes had a tight 70-68 win over East Perth.
