Cougars looking to roar into top four (Round 12 WSBL Preview)

Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars could continue their season of big improvement and move into the women's State Basketball League top four with victories against Australian Central East Perth Eagles and Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves.

The Cougars won just six games last year as they finished 10th but sisters Courtney and Kara Hargreaves, who are both averaging 14 points per game, have helped to transform Cockburn into title contenders in their first season at the club.

But the Wolves have won their past three games and will be desperate to hold onto their place in the top four with a home victory against Cockburn on Saturday in the round 12 match.

And sixth-placed East Perth is also in contention for a top four spot, which gives teams home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, after winning three of its past four games and should provide the Cougars a tough test on Friday.

Perth Redbacks will be looking to consolidate their spot in the top eight when they meet fellow finals contenders Western Stainless Stirling Senators.

Ninth-placed Stirling moved level on wins with the eighth-placed Redbacks after winning both its games last round and would move into the eight if it can hand Perth its fifth defeat from its last six games.

But the Senators will be without West Coast Waves guard Rachel Watman, who is expected to miss the rest of the season with injury, while leading scorer Michelle Joy is also in doubt with a foot problem.

Kalamunda Eastern Suns have fallen to seventh spot with losses in their past two games and they'll be trying to get back into form with an upset win against Mandurah Magic.

But the Magic are in third spot after winning their last three games and will start favourites for the clash at Ray Owen Sports Centre on Saturday.

Four consecutive defeats have ended any realistic hopes Lakeside Lightning had of making the playoffs, but they'll be out to preserve some pride when they host Southwest Slammers on Saturday.

The Slammers have lost their past 12 games and will be desperate to win for just the second time this season.
