Buccs back in contention (Saturday Night Wrap)

Geraldton Buccaneers gave their men's State Basketball League finals hopes a massive boost with an upset 100-95 win against defending champions Willetton Tigers.

The Buccaneers seemed out of finals contention just two weeks ago, but have now won consecutive games and could finish round 12 in the top eight if they win the final two games of this weekend's road-trip.

Geraldton had thrown away a 15-point third-quarter lead but kept the game close before Aaron Ralph made a clutch three-point play in the final seconds to win the game.

Ralph, who also hit the game-winning shot when the two sides met in Geraldton earlier in the season, had 29 points to lead his side to a victory which put a major dent in Willetton's top four hopes.

Wanneroo Wolves handed fellow top four side Cockburn Cougars their second loss from three games with an 89-83 result.

The Wolves moved level with the Cougars in second spot with 12 wins after Greg Hire (17 points and 16 rebounds) led his side to victory.

Goldfields Giants saw their disappointing form continue with a 114-101 loss to East Perth Eagles.

The Giants have lost four of their past five after East Perth's Jarrod Balcombe scored 26 points to help his side to its third win from four games.

Stirling Senators extended their winning streak to three games as Michael Jones (38 points) led them to a 112-97 victory over fellow top eight side Perth Redbacks.

Elsewhere, Kalamunda Eastern Suns ended their three-game losing run with a 96-87 win against Mandurah Magic and league leaders Lakeside Lightning thrashed Southwest Slammers 125-84.

In women's action, Wanneroo consolidated its top four spot with a 67-66 win against Cockburn, Mandurah defeated Kalamunda 85-74, Perth beat Stirling 68-36 and the Lightning thrashed the Slammers 91-49.
