NBL star Robbins hoping to roar with Wolves

Brad Robbins is hopeful his time in the State Basketball League over the Perth Wildcats' off-season will propel him to his best NBL season.

Robbins signed with the Wanneroo Wolves last week and will play with them for the rest of the SBL season, which is an opportunity he said he was looking forward to.

The 26-year-old Wildcats co-captain said he hoped playing in the SBL would have him more ready for the NBL campaign, after injuries affected his previous pre-seasons.

"I've always been playing catch-up in previous seasons," Robbins said.

"I've been injured the last three off-seasons and I've really been behind the eight-ball from the start of the season. And it has really taken me too many games to get into the mould of it.

"But this season I feel like I can really cement a good foundation of solid fitness and I hope to be fitter than I was last year a lot earlier and hopefully be playing more minutes, which is the main goal.

"There's a lot of good players in the SBL, I don't think it gets the credit it deserves. There are a lot of great players who could, if not go straight into an NBL roster they could definitely be development players. And I think the high standard of the league will really help me be ready for next season with the Wildcats."

The tenacious guard, who averaged 5.4 points and 2.1 assists per game last NBL season, said he was excited about getting to play with last year's Wildcats development player Greg Hire with the Wolves.

"Greg was the main reason I went to Wanneroo," Robbins said.

"Me and him get along great. He wants to learn, I feel like I've got a lot that I can help him out with and he, although he might not realise it, has certainly got a lot that he can help me with."

"It was a no-brainer, I was pretty keen to stay fit in the off-season and get some miles under my legs and Wanneroo was definitely the place to be."

Robbins made his Wolves debut in their 91-64 victory against Rockingham last weekend and had six points and four rebounds from 12 minutes in the court.

His Wolves side are next in action against Geraldton at Joondalup Basketball Stadium on Sunday, which Robbins said was a good opportunity to maintain their impressive form.
