Don't underestimate Slammers: Catalano

SOUTH West Slammers coach Carl Catalano warned the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers camp not to underestimate his side tomorrow night.

The winless Slammers were embarrassed last weekend when the Perry Lakes Hawks handed them their biggest loss of the season with a 60-115 belting.

Catalano said the humiliation had the Slammers determined to defeat their country rivals.

“The guys are more determined than ever to get a win this weekend,” he said.

“That is what you would expect though with eight games remaining this year, it is not all doom and gloom.”

The Buccs open their round 14 road trip against the Slammers and face thirdplaced Wanneroo Wolves on Sunday.

The Wolves are expected to have the luxury of suiting up Perth Wildcats guard Brad Robbins who signed last week.

For the Slammers, Trent Worthington is poised to remain on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

But Tyler Hickett and Corey Richardson should return to the Slammers’ line-up after attending basketball camps in China last week.

For Geraldton, Jordan Myers could make a comeback after breaking his elbow two months ago.

Catalano said his players always lift one or two gears when Geraldton comes to town.

“The Slammers and Buccaneers rivalry is always there,” he said.

“They [the Buccs] have some games where they are unstoppable and other games where sometimes they aren’t as good — their season has been really up and down.”

Import Todd Brown played the best game of his Buccaneers’ career in last week’s 84-77 loss to Cockburn Cougars.

The American will be key in his side’s second game of their weekend double-header against the Wolves.

The Wolves launched a smash-and-grab raid when the sides last met at Tip Top Stadium.

Seb Salinas silenced the home crowd with 32 points as the Wolves went on to win 92-83.
