Mandurah continues Slammers' woes

The Mandurah Magic continued their quest for a finals berth on Friday night with a convincing 103-74 victory over the South West Slammers.

Mandurah picked up their seventh win of the MSBL season, and now sit just one win outside the top eight. The Slammers remain winless at the bottom of the standings.

The opening period was a positive one for the Slammers as they jumped out to an early lead on the back of effective full court pressure and intensity.

However Aaron Trahair soon pulled back the Slammers' lead with 14 first quarter points, including four from three point range.

The beginning of the second period saw both teams continue trading three point baskets. Casey Crevelone was particularly active from beyond the arc for the Magic, who went into halftime leading by 12.

Despite a relatively quiet first half, import Nick Freer ensured the Slammers stayed competitive, however turnovers proved costly as Crevelone and Kane Thompson stretched Mandurah's lead beyond the reach of the Slammers.

The Magic finished the game with six players scoring in double figures, with Trahair leading the team with 19 points, followed by Ben Smith with 17. Freer led all scorers with 23 points.

Mandurah shot a respectable 44% from three point range and led the rebound count 42 to 28.

"We stuck to our game plan in the second half and locked down on defense. To allow them 46 points in the first half was unacceptable for us," Magic coach Jason Chalk said postgame.

"We spread the load around tonight which was good for us."

This weekend sees both teams in double headers, as the Magic will travel north to face the Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks, while the Slammers head back home to face the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers.

Earlier, a dominant performance from Shelly Boston saw the Mandurah Magic easily account for the South West Slammers 86-47.

Boston finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Hailey Dunham added 21 points for the Magic, as they consolidated their place in the top four of the WSBL standings.

Amanda Frontino and Bianca Donovan were the top scorers for the Slammers with 11 points apiece.
