Hawks swoop closer to Willetton (Round 14 WSBL Wrap)

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks are just one win behind women's State Basketball League leaders Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers after beating Mandurah Magic in round 14 action.

Perry Lakes' 68-60 win over the third-placed Magic and Willetton's shock 82-78 loss to Lakeside Lightning saw the Hawks move within one win of top spot, with both them and the Tigers having six matches left.

Mandurah had won seven straight coming into its match with the Hawks, after thrashing Southwest Slammers 86-47 on Friday, but last year's runner-up proved too good on Saturday, as Tegan Walker (16 points and eight rebounds) led Perry Lakes to its sixth consecutive win.

Victory saw the Hawks take advantage of Willetton's Friday loss, where ninth-placed Lakeside outscored the defending champions 42-35 to spark an unlikely win.

Jess Van Schie had 25 points to lead the Lightning to a victory which saw them move within one win of a top-eight spot, while Melissa Marsh had 26 points for the Tigers in their second defeat of the season.

Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars stayed in touch with the top four with a 54-47 win against Western Stainless Stirling Senators.

The fifth-placed Cougars trailed by nine at half-time but limited the Senators to just 13 second half points to come back for a victory which saw them move to just two points outside the top four.

Kara Hargreaves led Cockburn with 19 points, while Michelle Joy had 14 points for the Senators, who have lost their past four games.

Kalamunda Eastern Suns got back into form with a convincing 89-50 win against Rockingham Flames.

The Suns had fallen to seventh spot after three-straight losses but victory was never in doubt against the Flames, who remain bottom of the ladder after also losing 62-43 to Australian Central East Perth Eagles.

East Perth is two wins outside the top four with one game in hand after Kate Fielding led her side past the struggling Flames with 26 points and eight rebounds.

Like the Flames, Southwest also only has one win this season after Hailey Dunham (21 points) helped the Magic thrash them on Friday.
