Lakeside's dominant run continues (Saturday Night Wrap)

Lakeside Lightning have moved one step closer to securing the men’s State Basketball League’s minor premiership with a 93-86 win over third-placed Cockburn Cougars.

Lakeside's 10th-straight win left it with a two-game break on second-placed Wanneroo.

Once again it was the imports that did it for Lakeside, Luke Payne (37 points) and Ben Beran (23).

Trailing by 16 points at the final change, Cockburn mounted a gallant challenge, outscoring the Lightning 23-14 in the final period.

East Perth Eagles secured their position in the top eight with 111-103 win over Mandurah Magic, who will now need to win all of their remaining games to see post-season action.

Ben Smith recorded a game-high 31 points for the losing Magic.

Goldfield Giants ensured their realistic finals hopes remained alive with a 94-81 win over Geraldton Buccaneers.

Matthew Rosinski had 30 points for the Giants, while Ben Pepper again led the Buccs’ with 25 points and 14 rebounds.

Willetton Tigers handed Perry Lakes Hawks a lifeline after being thrashed 140-76 at the hands of Wanneroo.

Victory could have seen the fifth-placed Tigers move equal with the Hawks on 13 wins, but the defending champions were humiliated with their second defeat of more than 60 points in as many weeks.

The Hawks went down 118-100 against Stirling Senators, who sit seventh after their second-straight win.

Perth’s 113-90 win over Southwest Slammers saw them move ahead of Kalamunda into the crucial eighth-place on the ladder, but the Redbacks have played an extra match.

In women’s action, top-placed Willetton won a tight 70-66 match against Wanneroo, East Perth Eagles upset Mandurah Magic 58-53, Southwest took care of Perth 65-63 for just its second win of the year, Perry Lakes accounted for Stirling 69-60 and Lakeside upset Cockburn 70-60 to consolidate its spot in the top eight.
