Off the bench - Most Potent Scorers

We all know scoring is the aim of the game so this week I look at the most potent and dangerous scorers in the league.

While most people look at it simply as a stats game, I like to broaden the horizon and look at the players who are the most dangerous offensively- the ones that are multi-dimensional and have a range of ways to score.

They may not necessarily be the leading scorers in the league, but that might just be because they don’t take anywhere near enough shots than others.

The WSBL has never looked so potent in my eyes.. so here they come.

1. Jasmine Hooper
PPG 15.8 RPG 9.0 APG 4.5 FG% 46.7

Hoops is so dangerous because she just has a way of finding the ball in her hands. She is probably one of the best offensive rebounders in the league and despite what everyone says, I think she can shoot the jump shot as easily as she can put the ball on the floor going right. Her mid-range game is very good and when she gets enough practice to get her three point shot in order and finish left, she will be very, very good.

2. Michelle Joy
PPG 17.3 RPG 8.2 APG 2.1 FG% 36.0

She is as tall as she is quick which makes her hard to guard. She can shoot the ball to three point range and is lightning quick for a post. Her size and speed combined make her a very tough match up for opposition teams. Do you stick a post player on her and get dragged out to the perimeter or a guard and get posted on? A bit of a pick your poison scenario. Her ability to score is probably also best described by the fact that she is the player who leads all free throw attempts in the league. Michelle is also an under-rated passer.

3. Casey Miholovich
PPG 18.4 RPG 7.6 APG 5.4 FG% 43.0

Milo continues to be a dominant scoring presence by scoring off pretty much every shot and every spot on the basketball floor. She can shoot the shot to three point land, post you up, blow past you on a drive or simply make you pay if you don’t get a body on her on rebounds. Her smarts are probably her greatest weapon as she will simply find a way to pick apart her opposition defender with her many offensive skills. Her trademark step through still continues to expose defenders to this day! I guess like any good player why stop using it when it’s so effective!

4. Kate Malpass
PPG 17.1 RPG 5.9 APG 5.8 FG% 46.5

Another who presents difficult match-ups for opposition teams because of her size. She is a tall PG and will often score as much in inside as she can outside. Malps has range to the three ball and is deadly on an open jump shot. She loves getting to the rack on her right hand and is also a capable ball handler and very good passer in transition. When you’re averaging 17+ ppg and still managing to dine out with team mates at just over 5 assists per game, you know you are a solid contributor on offence.

5. Melissa Marsh
PPG 17.9 RPG 6.1 APG 5.2 FG% 38.5

The newly re-signed Waves player needs to be given more respect than just her three point shooting ability. Min is a deadly spot up shooter who can also put the ball on the floor with a very good step back! She handles the ball a bit as well with the Tigers and no doubt commanding double teams and drawing help defenders allows her to get team mates involved as highlighted by her 5 assists per game average. Min is also a tenacious player who is always on the move- giving her defenders nightmares as she is more than just a spot up shooter. She will literally move and cut to all areas of the floor to get open. Like any good, respected offensive threat- a defender never gets any rest when you attach on to Marsh as you defensive assignment. Two words, Good Luck!

So there you go, 5 of the very best in our league. The ones that no doubt give coaches nightmares, defenders the old sigh feeling and the ones who can find more than one way to score. The game treasures the dynamic players and these are 5 of the very best in my eyes.

Next week, we flip the coin! I look at the top 5 defenders in the league who make you go “It’s gonna be a long night!” when they match up on you on defense.
