Perry Lakes squeeze past Senators

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks will take a one-nil lead and home court advantage into game two of their quarterfinal series against ATD Stirling Senators after claiming game one 88-83 at Warwick Leisure Centre.

Stirling now face the unenviable task of having to defeat Perry Lakes twice at the WABC - where the Hawks lost just four of their 13 games in the regular season- to keep their season alive.

Hawks coach Dion Dagostino said his side’s stingy defence laid the foundations for the win.

“Well it’s all about defence, our offense flows. Anthony Lee, Ben Purser, Joe-Alan Tupeau, everyone on our team can score so defence is our goal, we need to stop them because that’s the hardest part,” he said.

“We kept them to 83, when they beat us last time they scored 118.

“Purser did a terrific job tonight on (Lee) Roberts.”

Roberts only managed nine points, while on the other end of the floor Purser had 22 of his own.

Perry Lakes’ Lee and Stirling’s Michael Jones top-scored for their respective sides with 23 points.

Stirling jumped out of the blocks to lead by three at the first break.

The sides then alternated five point buffers at the changes, the Hawks leading by that margin at the end of the contest.

“I’d much rather be going home with one game up our sleeve. They’ve got to beat us twice at home now which is a daunting task for them but by no means is it over,” Dagostino said of the one-nil lead.

Games two and three of the series will be played on Saturday and Sunday (if required) at the WABC.
