Magic name WSBL leadership group

The team went through a selection process involving both players and coaches and in what coach Mark Utley described as a pleasing result Rachel Halleen and Gemma Thomas were named co captains of the team for 2012.

"When Gemma talk’s people listen and Rachel has a great energy about her that can really get the team going” said Coach Mark Utley.

The two take over from Casey Mihovilovich who will be taking the year off from playing but still be involved with the team. Rachel and Gemma are only the 4th and 5th girls to ever captain the side behind club legends Brooke Burns, Jackie Smith and Milo.

It is a great honour to lead this team with the success they have had and Coach Mark Utley has full faith that the girls will do a tremendous job.

Gemma has been a stalwart for the club playing in a number of championship games and playing juniors for the club before heading off to college in the states. One of the most experienced players in the league Gemma demands the attention of opposition teams and has earned the respect of her peers.

Rachel has been a Mandurah Magic player throughout her career from juniors through to seniors. Rachel has also been a coach at WABL level and even though she is young at age has plenty of experience on the SBL court and will be looked upon to take an even bigger role this year.

The women kick off their season with a game against Perry Lakes Hawks on Friday 16th of March at the State Basketball Centre. Their first home game will be Thursday 5th of April at the MARC against the South West Slammers
