Buccs seal second import

AFTER months of searching, the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers finally signed their second restricted player on Friday and coach Ray Evans says he is a perfect fit.

American Morgan Sabia is expected to miss the early rounds of the SBL season but will arrive in Geraldton at the end of March or early April.

He is coming off a knee injury but Evans is confi dent the 6’8” forward will be able to produce big things for the club.

“We are expecting big things from him,” he said.

“He is an inside-out player who can post up but also shoot the three and stretch the floor, which is perfect for what we want to do this year.

“I knew he was our guy from the first time I saw him play. Matt (Wundenberg) said the same thing when he watched tapes of Morgan play.”

Sabia had ties to the Mid West even before signing with the Buccs.

He was an assistant coach at former Geraldton junior Jesse Hunt’s school, Sir Francis Drake High School, in San Francisco.

Evans said Buccaneers’ great Dan Hunt played a role in convincing the Hartford University graduate to relocate to Australia.

“Dan said Morgan is one of the top ten players to come out of Sir Francis Drake High School,” he said.

“That probably does not mean much but Dan said there have been a lot of good players to come out of the school.”

The Buccaneers are still seeking new talent to add to the roster and are in talks with another possible Australian signing.

Speaking on 98.1FM Spirit Sports Magazine, Evans also revealed former Buccaneer Andrew Horstman is considering a comeback.

He has been training with the team during preseason and will decide if he will play following the local competition finals series.

The Buccs begin their season this weekend at the SBL pre-season blitz.

They will play four shortened games on Saturday and Sunday at the WA Basketball Centre.

Their first will tip off at 10am Saturday against a side made up of Country WA players.

The Buccs will go on to play Perry Lakes in their second game on Saturday and then will clash with Cockburn and Goldfields on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Sun City Plumbing has committed to the Buccaneers’ cause for another year.

They will again be the club’s naming rights sponsor and are looking forward to a winning season.
