Lay & Thomas look to bring excitement to Buccs

EXCITEMENT machines Daniel Thomas and Michael Lay are ready to cause the State Basketball League plenty of headaches this season.

Along with youngster Luke Wrensted, Thomas and Lay have vowed to bring excitement back to Activewest Stadium in 2012 after a disappointing 2011 campaign.

That will start this weekend when the trio start the season against the South West Slammers tomorrow and Mandurah Magic on Sunday.

Thomas, who signed with the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers from East Perth during the offseason, said he is looking to earn his blue and gold stripes back.

"We are all going to have to earn our spots this year, Ray has put that challenge to us," he said.

"I feel fresh but I have been down here working out almost everyday through preseason so I have been keeping up with it.

"With myself and Mike we have two point guards who have been in the league a while and are leaders on the court."

Lay won the 2011 Dan Hunt Trophy, awarded to the team's most valuable player.

He spent the offseason in Geraldton and decided against playing in Europe during the Australian summer like he has done in previous years.

Lay said he is glad he made the decision to stay in the Mid West.

"I played a little bit of local comp to get back into shape and now we have been training for a while it is good to get back in that competitive environment."

"I took four weeks off after last season to just have a rest, so I am feeling refreshed and recharged."

The American import wished the rest of the SBL good luck, when they come up against the trio of Buccaneers' guards this season.

"The intelligence we all have on the court really balances out."

"Daniel and I are team orientated, that's a real bonus and then we can also impact the game whether we are scoring or driving and kicking.

"We'll be tough to match up against, especially defensively with our quickness."
