Senators power past Goldfields

The John Hughes Stirling Senators have prevailed over the Silverlake Resources Goldfields Giants 96-71 in men's State Basketball League action on Sunday.

The first quarter was a low-scoring affair with the Giants leading at the end of the quarter 20-19.

The second quarter saw the Giants continue their dominance over the Senators with Giants Ty Harrelson becoming the Giants leading scorer with 15 points for the quarter. At the 8 minute mark of the second quarter Stirling took the lead for the first time in the game.

The game continued to remain close with the half time score of 41-41.

The start of the third quarter saw Stirling break away from Goldfields with the crowd cheering them on. The Senators new import from American Adhar Mayen boosted the Senators lead scoring both free throws to make it 47-43. It was still very close throughout the third quarter as the Giants tried hard to close the Senators lead.

The Senators lead kept growing as player Nikolas Iliadis put the Senators 7 points ahead of the Giants. The Giants spectators got even more involved in the game cheering ‘defence’ to motivate their team. This brought about a shot clock violation much to the joy of the Giants supporters and coach Daniel Fisher. The result of the third quarter was 73-61.

The fourth quarter started with Giants player Ty Harrelson reducing the lead back to 9 points with his three-point shot. Senator’s players Aaron Coddington and James Elliot made an impact on the game as they helped to increase their teams lead.

The Senators kept the Giants scoreless for a few minutes in the last term to hold on for a good victory on the back of Michael Jones' 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Ty Harrelson had 23 points to lead the Giants.

Senators Coach Don Jamieson said he was happy with the way his team performed.

“Today we all contributed and we all played for each other which is exactly what we have been working on, so I was happy with the performance,” he said.

When asked what his predictions for next week’s game against Mandurah Magic were he said" “It is going to be a tough one . . . but we are up for it and we’re looking forward to it.”
