Flames put out by Wolves

A very strong second half display by the Australian Belt Scrapers Wanneroo Wolves has seen them run away victors, 83-119, over the Rockingham Peel Finance Flames in the men's State Basketball League on Friday night.

In a game that marked Trent Gerovich’s 200th game, the Flames failed to support their guard as they fell away rapidly in what turned out to be an incredibly one sided affair.

A gallant Flames line-up managed to keep the game within 10 points for much of the first half, and if not for a 13 point third quarter by young guard Jackson Hussey, it may have stayed that way. Hussey was outstanding with 29 points, five rebounds, seven assists and six steals. His play was instrumental in building the Wolves second half run.

Hussey was well supported by fellow starter and import Jordan Wild (20pts, 14reb), and role player Doug Gates (15pts, 55% FG).

Flames import James Booyer had 11 points and 11 rebounds in a stellar first half, keeping the Flames in touch 44-54 going into the long break. Although his impact in the second half withered as he managed only three points and two rebounds for the rest of the game.

The men in black struggled to keep up with the Wolves in the second half, being outscored 39-65 in the back stretch of the game.

The Wolves now sit in equal first position with a 3-0 record and will look to extend their winning streak to four when they take on the Perth Redbacks on Sunday. The Flames move to equal bottom as they still search for their first win this year (0-3).

Earlier, Wanneroo ran away with a 78-51 win over Rockingham in the women's contest in a dominant second half performance.

The Flames stayed with the Wolves early and were down by just seven points midway through the third quarter, but were outscored 37-17 from there.

Nikita Martin continued her outstanding start to her Wanneroo career with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Ainsleigh and Bekki Sanders scored 10 apiece.

Kaye Tucker top-scored for the winless Flames with 18 points.
