Wanneroo hands Perth first loss

In the men's SBL game in round two the Australian Belt Scrappers Wanneroo Wolves defeated the Perth Redbacks with a hard fought 10 point win 104-94 on Sunday.

The first quarter saw both teams go into team fouls with it being a close game throughout the first quarter. Jackson Hussey was the Wolves leading scorer for the first quarter. For the Redbacks, Adrian Majstrovich, was their quarter’s leading scorer with 11 points. The score at the end of the first quarter was 33-33.

Hussey again led his team with 14 points for the second quarter. Michael Vigor for the Redbacks helped his side to close the Wolves lead to 4 at the end; and being the leading scorer for his side with 15 points for that quarter. The half time result was 58-54 in favour of the Wolves.

The third quarter saw the Wolves increase their lead over the Redbacks as the home crowd motivated their team by chanting ‘defence’ to rally support for their team and causing a few mistakes for the Redbacks. The Wolves were successful in holding off their opponents and increased their lead to 13 points at the end of the third quarter; with the score of 78-65.

Vigor proved valuable for his side as he helped bring the score down in the fourth quarter with his skilful shooting on fast breaks; but it was not enough to hold off the Wolves from winning the game.

Hussey and the Redbacks’ Vigor both scored 27 points for their respective sides making them the leading scorers of the game.

Earlier, in the Women’s game, the Wanneroo Wolves defeated the Perth Redbacks with a 4 point win, 60-56.

The first quarter was dominated by the Wolves as they led at the end of the first quarter 22-14.

In the second quarter, the Redbacks turned the game to lead 36-34 at half time making the game close and exciting to watch. Stephanie Sauter for the Redbacks led the scoring with 13 points at half time. However, the Wolves dominated the rebounds in the second, with Ainsleigh Sanders totalling 6 rebounds for her side in the second quarter.

The Redbacks were still in with a fighting chance in the third quarter with the accurate free-throwing from Narelle Henry and Marita Payne helping their side stay in the game. But the Wolves outscored the away side with 18 points to 6, demonstrating their power. The score for the third quarter was 52-42 to the Wolves.

The Redbacks gave their all right to the end with a close exciting game narrowly losing to the Wolves.

The leading scorer for the game was the Redbacks’ Payne with a total of 16 points.
