Magic beat Slammers in southern derby

Mandurah Magic have maintained their unbeaten record at home this season and recorded their third victory of the men's SBL campaign with a convincing 105-88 win over the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers.

The victory was especially sweet for Magic captain Ben Capron who was celebrating his 250th SBL game and his 200th with the Magic.

The Slammers set the pace of the game early, looking to imports Carlos White and Senario Hillman to provide the spark. Despite trailing by only one point at quarter time the Slammers looked sharp as White and Hillman led their scoring.

However the first half turned into the Tom Remmerswaal show as Mandurah outscored the Slammers 29-17 in the second quarter. Remmerswaal went on a scoring tear and ended the half with 25 points on 73% shooting.

The third quarter continued in similar fashion for the Magic as Remmerswaal carried the scoring load for the Magic. Taylor Land dominated the fast break for the Magic as they looked to run the Slammers off the floor.

White provided some resistance for the Slammers while youngster Anton Fimmano showed some great shooting touch off the bench. However it was Land who controlled the tempo of the game as he continued to dish the ball effectively to his teammates for numerous open shots and layups.

Magic coach Jason Chalk had the opportunity to insert some youth into the game in the last few minutes as the Magic ran away with the game. All players that stepped on the floor made it onto the scoresheet for the Magic. Mandurah dominated the points in the paint tally 60-28, and also had more rebounds and assists than the Slammers.

Remmerswaal ended the game with a career high 43 points on 73% shooting from the field. Land also had his best game of the season finishing with a triple double, having 12 points, ten rebounds and a massive 17 assists.

For the Slammers, Carlos White was their standout with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Senario Hillman was the next best with 15 points.

“We came out a bit slow and they got the jump on us, and the Slammers have always done that really well, but we did good to peg it back,” Remmerswaal said after the game.

“I thought I had a great game. I started to force it a bit in the third but to come out with a career high is really pleasing.”

In earlier WSBL action, the Slammers continued their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought 70-61 victory over the Magic.

The Slammers overshadowed celebrations for 2011 WSBL MVP Casey Mihovilovich with a physical brand of basketball that saw numerous players on the floor after being fouled hard.

South West finished with five players in double figures as import Valerie Ogoke led the way with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Tarsha Fletcher and Gemma Thomas both had 13 points to lead the scoring for the Magic.

The Slammers head back to Eaton to host the Perth Redbacks this Saturday night while next Saturday night sees the Magic play host to the Rockingham Flames.
