Goldfields in giant-killing feat (Saturday night wrap)

Goldfields Giants put a poor start to the men's State Basketball League season behind them with a surprising 92-86 win over country rivals Geraldton on Saturday.

The Giants entered the game outside the top eight after losing three of their first four games but overturned a 10 point deficit late in the third quarter to stun the Buccaneers on their home court.

Big man Michael Haney, who is only filling in while fellow import Darnell Dialls is injured, played a crucial role in handing Geraldton its second consecutive loss by scoring 27 points and dishing out six assists.

Wanneroo Wolves emphatically returned to form following their shock loss to Willetton a week earlier by smashing Perry Lakes Hawks 113-89 in a rematch of last season's Grand Final.

New recruit Jackson Hussey was at his dominant best for the Wolves, scoring 40 points to lead the defending champions to their fifth win from six games.

South West Slammers' abysmal home form continued as they were annihilated 109-77 by Perth.

Ryan Neill top-scored with 36 points to help the Redbacks hand South West its third defeat by more than 30 points at home and earn their fifth win from six matches.

East Perth finally broke its drought with a comfortable 115-102 triumph against Kalamunda, led by Jarrod Balcombe's 27 points.

Willetton proved far too good for Rockingham in a 115-94 men's victory, with Rob Kampman (40 points and seven rebounds) leading the way, but had to battle harder in a 81-74 triumph in the women's competition.

West Coast Waves forward Jasmine Hooper scored an incredible 40 points and tallied 10 rebounds to help the defending champions to their fourth win from five games.

Elsewhere, Wanneroo's perfect start came to a surprising halt as it fell 62-61 in overtime to Perry Lakes but the Slammers remained undefeated thanks to their 54-44 triumph against Perth and Kalamunda knocked off struggling East Perth 77-69.
