Buccs fight impresses new US import

DESPITE watching his new side slip out of the top eight on Saturday night, new Sun City Plumbing Buccaneer Morgan Sabia found a silver lining.

Sabia watched from the bench as the Goldfields Giants recorded a 92-86 win to hand the Buccs their third loss in five games, leaving them in ninth position after four rounds.

The American import was impressed with the fight his new teammates showed on a tough night where they made 39 per cent of their shots from the field.

“The team definitely has a lot of talent and I was impressed by the fact that, even though we had a bad shooting night and an off-night, all round we were still in the game,” he said.

“Our shooting percentage did not help us and then we went stagnant against their zone defence.”

Michael Haney top scored for the Giants with 27 points, while Daniel Thomas had 26 to lead the Buccs.

Sabia is beginning to get back into the swing of things after arriving from America last Wednesday.

He is still recovering from knee surgery six month ago but said he hoped to be fit to play against Perry Lakes in two weeks.

“I have done a few things to test out my knee and it feels stronger,” he said.

“I won’t start full training until maybe next week.”

The forward is hoping to bring a new dimension to the Buccs’ offence when he gets on the court.

“Hopefully I can be another option,” he said.

“Through my college career I became a good three-point shooter and that is one of my top strengths but I can also take the ball in the post.”
