Flames extinguish Slammers perfect start (Round 6 women's wrap)

In round six of the women's State Basketball League the Rockingham Flames took out the previously undefeated South West Slammers by 12 points, leaving the Lakeside Lightning remaining as the only undefeated team in the league.

The vastly improved Flames have been strong this season since the addition of import Emma Cannon and the 68-56 win confirms that they will be a force in 2012 after finishing last in 2011.

Rockingham's star import Emma Cannon was a key offensive asset scoring 17 points and 17 rebounds.

The undefeated Lakeside defeated bottom of the ladder Cockburn Cougars 82-65 for Cockburn's sixth consecutive loss of the season.

Strong contributors for the Lightening were guards Courtney Byrnes with 22 points, and six rebounds and Emily Fielding with 22 points and nine rebounds.

Despite a strong offensive effort from Cougars import Stephanie Jones (24 points and 10 rebounds) the Cockburn girls didn't manage to land one out of 14 three point shots.

In another devastating weekend for the Mandurah Magic they extended their season to seven consecutive losses after going down to the Wanneroo Wolves on Friday night and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns on Saturday.

The Wolves are gunning for the top spot after defeating the Magic 72-85 with thanks to Nikita-lee Martin (16 points, four rebounds) and veteran Sue Williams with 10 points, two rebounds and three assists.

The Suns took down the Magic 85-73 with stand-out performances from Suns import Rachel Muenggenborg 25 points, five rebounds and five assists and Lizel Buckley with 15 points, eight rebounds and two assists.

Despite the Magics loss Mandurah's Gemma Thomas had an impressive offensive game with 22 points, seven rebounds and two assists.

The East Perth Eagles bounced back after last weeks loss and are nearly in reach of a top eight spot after defeating the Willetton Tigers 56-49, the Eagles Samantha Norwood with 16 points six rebounds and three assists.

The Perth Redbacks beat the Stirling Senators 75-71 with the help of a superior field goal and three point shooting accuracy.

Dominant Redbacks centre Marita Payne starred with 20 points and 13 rebounds while Senators recruit Lyndal Gardner stepped up for her side with 25 points, four rebounds and three assists.
