Magic jump into top four

Mandurah Magic backed up from their thrilling buzzer beating victory on Friday night against Willetton with a comfortable 114-100 victory over Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants on Saturday.

The victory sees the Magic move back up into third spot with a 9-3 record, while the Giants drop back to 11th with a 5-7 record after also losing on Sunday to Perry Lakes.

After their hard fought win on Friday night, the Magic appeared somewhat sluggish to start the game as the Giants skipped out to an early lead on the back of Ty Harrelson. Some early turnovers cost the Magic some easy baskets as Darnell Dialls and Dwayne Radcliffe crashed the boards to provide the Giants second chance opportunities.

The Magic were able to pull the lead back with Aaron Trahair connecting on some big three point shots. Harrelson continued his excellent shooting touch in the first half as he finished with 25 points at the main break.

However it was the big man combination of Tom Remmerswaal and Taylor Mullenax who restored order for the Magic as they took over the low post and caused problems for the Giants as they forced Dialls into foul trouble.

The Magic looked to run their fast break and it resulted in some easy layups as Andrew Bowman and Taylor Land continued to find their running team mates for some easy shots. Despite picking up what appeared to be a slight ankle injury on Friday night, Bowman dished out a game high 16 assists.

The third quarter seemed to be the game breaker for the Giants as they were outscored 34-20 by the Magic who continued to get open shots with their efficient ball movement. Remmerswaal’s outside shot proved dangerous as both he and Mullenax also cashed in on missed shots by sharing the offensive rebound load.

Despite outscoring the Magic in the final term, the lead proved too much for Goldfields to peg back as the Magic consolidated their second win in as many games over the weekend.

Remmerswaal continued his outstanding form this season leading the team in scoring with 31 points. Mullenax was next best for the Magic with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Harrelson led all scorers in the game with 34 points on 75% shooting from the field.

“Friday night was a fantastic win for the boys and it took a lot out of them as far as energy goes so we came out a bit slow tonight but I am pleased with how they played,” Mandurah coach Jason Chalk said after the game.

“Goldfields are always a dangerous team and they play hard away from home so we knew we needed to work hard defensively to stop their scorers.”

Round 10 sees the Magic head to Morley to take on East Perth as the Giants return home to face an in form Wanneroo Wolves.
