Historic weekend for Slammers

Saturday night’s result at the Eaton Recreation Centre was unremarkable. But the implications of it are monumental.

The Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers women’s side eased past Cockburn 76-70 and moved not only to the top of the WSBL table but also into unchartered territory.

In snatching the points from the lowly Cougars — the Slammers’ ninth victory this season — the club can toast its most successful WSBL campaign to date.

In the midst of their 16th season in the competition, the South West women’s side’s previous best effort was in 2002 when they chalked eight wins.
