Lightning strike paralyses Eagles

The Lakeside Lightning reign at the top of the Men’s SBL standings has continued with a convincing 110-75 victory over the East Perth Eagles in their week 12 clash played at the Lakeside Recreation Centre tonight.

The home side set up their 13th win for the season with a strong opening half domination by Luke Payne, Jarrad Prue and Chris Sofoulis.

Tom Jervis and Jarrod Balcombe tried hard to keep the Eagles within reach but the 10-point half time deficit was blown out during the third quarter for a match winning 24-point lead at the last break.

Payne finished with 20 points, while Prue was devastating on the boards with 22 rebounds for the Lightning.

Jervis meanwhile top scored for East Perth with 19 points, just one ahead of Balcombe (18 points), while Austin Kisselev, Corey Easley shared 10 rebounds each with Jervis.

With the game beyond doubt, Lakeside coach Andy Stewart gave his bench warmers a run in the fourth quarter for which they didn’t disappoint either.

Patrick Banks, Brad Jackson and Tom Parkinson all knocked down three point shots that helped the Lightning move swiftly past 100 and left the Eagles in their dust stuck in the 60’s.

Earlier, the East Perth Eagles Women’s side stunned their more fancied opponents Lakeside with an 83-77 victory.

Despite breaking out to a handy 14-point lead during the first half, the Eagles withstood a courageous fight back from the home side, who took the lead mid-way through the fourth quarter from a Claire Johnson basket.

Samantha Norwood led all scorers with 32 points and 13 rebounds for the visiting Eagles, and was assisted by Kate Fielding (15 points) and Nicole St Jorre (13 points).

Assisting Johnson (20 points) for the home side were Courtney Byrnes (18 points, 8 rebounds) and Jessica Seyler (17 points).

It’s back to back away games for Lakeside, Rockingham tomorrow evening followed by the Perth Redbacks at Belmont next Friday.

East Perth meanwhile have the week off before returning on June 15 at home against the Wanneroo Wolves.
