Buccs get back winning feeling

The winning feeling is back in the Geraldton Buccaneers’ camp after Saturday night’s 134-96 demolition of the bottom placed Rockingham Flames at Activewest Stadium.

Geraldton still sits in 12th position on the ladder but are just two games out of a playoff position with seven matches remaining this season.

Next week they take on the lowly South West Slammers and then country rivals Goldfields Giants who are in eighth position on the SBL ladder.

Ray Evans said the team is still confident they can feature in this year’s playoffs.

“The guys are definitely confident we can make, had a few blokes come up to me at shootaround on Friday and they have done the maths and think we are still a big chance,” he said.

“It is all up to us, if we start well again and let teams back into the game then it will be hard for us.”

Morgan Sabia led the Buccaneers on Saturday night with a game high 28 points as the home team netted more than 30 points in every quarter.

The Buccs’ often stagnant offence was in full flow from the first tip as Daniel Thomas, Aaron Ralph and Mat Wundenberg all took advantage.

Thomas and Ralph scored 22 points a piece while Wundenberg recorded 20 points and 17 rebounds in a stellar performance.

As a team, the Buccs connected on 56 percent of their shot attempts and netted 15 of their 30 three pointers.

Evans said the Buccs’ good shooting night was a combination of their offence and the Flames’ defence.

“You obviously have to knock down the shots but we got better looks then we have in recent weeks,” he said.

“I think there was less pressure because of we were playing the bottom team.

“The most pleasing thing was that we got a good start again and did not let the other team get back into the game.”

Next week’s clash with the Slammers is very winnable for the Buccaneers.

A win against the Giants in Kalgoorlie on June 30 would go a long way to helping the blue and gold sneak back into the top half of the table.
