Redbacks win drug action week challenge

The Perth Redbacks men had a 97 to 87 home-game win against the ninth-placed Goldfields Giants in the 2012 State Basketball League Drug Action Week Challenge played on Sunday.

Shooting guard Jarrad Prior won the Local Drug Action Groups Inc. award for the best Redbacks player scoring 19 along with five steals, seven rebounds and three assists.

Redbacks forward Blake Bender scored 26 and had nine rebounds while point guard Joel Wagner had 11 assists, 22 points and seven rebounds.

Shaun Bennison, who played with a leg injury, scored a courageous 10 points and brought down nine rebounds.

The Redbacks men had a 101 to 111 away-game loss on Saturday to the eighth placed Perry Lakes Hawks.

Prior top-scored for the Redbacks with 29 points along with four steals, five assists and six rebounds while centre Michael Vigor scored 20 and had eight rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Bender scored 16 and brought down 10 rebounds while Wagner made 12 assists and had nine points.

The Redbacks men remain in fifth-place in the 14-team competition with 12 wins and eight losses.

The Redbacks women’s team beat the Hawks 68 to 52.

This was their fourth win in a row and sees them consolidate second-place in the 12-team competition with 12 wins and five losses.

Redbacks point-guard Rachel Watman was the game-high scorer with 15 along with five steals and three assists.

Centre Marita Payne had nine rebounds, four blocked shots and 10 points while shooting guard Narelle Henry five assists and nine points.

Point-guard Gabby O’Sullivan had 10 points while forward Jessica Jakens scored nine and brought down four rebounds.

The Redbacks play the East Perth Eagles at the Morley Recreation Centre in an away-game this Saturday with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
