"There's no tomorrow" - Lay

Geraldton Buccaneers import Michael Lay says there is no tomorrow if the blue and gold lose tomorrow’s night game in Kalgoorlie against the Goldfields Giants.

Lay will suit up for his 100th SBL game with the Buccs, who are currently in 12th position on the ladder.

The energetic guard has two Dan Hunt Trophies, awarded to the Buccs’ season MVP, over his four-year career in Geraldton.

He has played for the Buccaneers’ in 2006-07 and returned to the Mid West for the 2011 season and said he has not ruled out finishing his career in Geraldton.

Lay said he hopes to cap off his milestone game with a win and keep the Buccs in finals calculations.

“It is a great achievement as a professional athlete to play 100 games with one club,” he said.

“The organisation has played an intricate role in my life by offering me my first job as a professional basketball player.”

With six games remaining this season the Buccaneers have a win-loss record of seven-13.

Lay said every game from now until the end of the season is monumental for the Buccaneers if they want to play finals.

“This is a very important game for us in order to keep our finals hopes alive,” he said.

“A loss will most certainly see an end to our hopes of making finals.

“In order to win we will have to amalgamate as one team, sacrifice for one another on the court and show strong character throughout the game.”

Ty Harrelson is the Giants’ leading scorer this season and is averaging 18.6 points a game.

He was critical in the season’s first meeting between the two sides on April 7 at Activewest Stadium.

The Giants prevailed in that game but Lay said the Buccs have learnt a lot since that match-up.

“Our aim is to be better this week than we were last week. Basketball is a game of ebbs and flows and as of late we are starting to show signs of growth,” he said.
