Wanneroo bounce back (Round 17 women's wrap)

Wanneroo Wolves have snapped a six game losing streak with back-to-back victories that puts them back in touch with the top four heading into the last three rounds of the women’s state basketball league.

The Wolves defeated the Perth Redbacks 60-48 on Friday night with Sue Williams 16 points leading the way for the Wolves who put a 25-6 last quarter together to get over the line.

Saturday night saw the Wolves defeat cross-town rivals Stirling Senators 83-41 with solid games from Megan D'Arcy (17 points, ten rebounds), Megan Lee (16 points) and Shani Amos (14 points, five rebounds).

Perry Lakes Hawks had a strong weekend, defeating the Mandurah Magic 72-48 on Friday night and narrowly going down to the top of the table South West Slammers on Saturday 68-66.

Friday saw Belinda Mayger lead the way for the Hawks with 22 points and 9 rebounds, while Shelley Boston was strong for the Magic with 10 points and 12 rebounds and was backed up by Rachel Halleen who had 15 points.

On Saturday Slammers centre Zoe Harper (17 points, 15 rebounds) and guard Kara Hargreaves (15 points) were too much for the Hawks who were again led by Belinda Mayger who finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Mandurah also dropped Saturday night’s game against Lakeside Lightning 80-55 with Jessica Seyler leading the way for Lakeside with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Claire Johnson finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.

Gemma Thomas led three Mandurah players in double figures, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds for the night.

East Perth Eagles are just clinging to a spot in the top eight after two consecutive losses this weekend, going down to the Willetton Tigers on Friday night and then the Cockburn Cougars on Saturday.

After a sluggish start to the game the second place Tigers bounced back to take down the Eagles 71-68, youngster Sophie Doyle was impressive with 13 points to lead the Tigers who are now on a four game winning streak.

The tenth place Cockburn Cougars shocked the Eagles 71-65 on Saturday despite a desperate last quarter come back from the Eagles, doubling the Cougars final quarter score, it wasn’t enough to close the deficit.

Cockburn were led by dominant import Stephanie Jones who finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds while East Perth centre Sam Norwood had 17 points and 12 rebounds for her side.
