Tribunal Result - Glenn Ellis

The State Basketball League recently received a report from the women’s SBL game held on Friday 6 July between the Perth Redbacks and Wanneroo Wolves at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre.

Perth Redbacks WSBL Head Coach Glenn Ellis was reported for “using abusive, threatening, obscene language or signs” and “acted in an unsportsmanlike manner in the stadium precincts or surrounds” by the match officials.

Ellis pleaded guilty to “using abusive, threatening, obscene language or signs” and not guilty to “acted in an unsportsmanlike manner in the stadium precincts or surrounds” at his tribunal hearing on July 11.

After hearing statements from the relevant parties, the tribunal found Ellis guilty of both charges and applied a ban for a total of three games, with all three games being suspended until the end of the Redbacks WSBL regular season (July 21) meaning that Ellis is free to coach this weekend.

The suspended sentence will automatically apply should Ellis be found guilty of a charge brought before the tribunal in relation to any incident in the next three Redbacks WSBL games.

The tribunal noted that Ellis pleaded guilty to one charge, was remorseful, apologised after the game and has a clean record in his long service to basketball in Western Australia as a respected player and coach and that the incident was on the lower scale of the charges.

The State Basketball League continues to remind teams that player and coach behaviour needs to be at an acceptable level at all times to ensure that all clubs and the league is represented in a positive manner.
