Tigers defeat Giants in crucial clash

The Southlands Boulevarde Willetton Tigers ended their losing run by beating the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants 92-87 on Sunday.

The Tigers outscored the Giants in the final period to hang on to the lead in the close and often fiery affair.

Seven points was the largest lead all game as the Giants came out looking to secure their second win in as many days having defeated the South West Slammers on Saturday night.

The Tigers soon took control and refused to relinquish their lead with strong defence and impressive defensive play led by Ephrem Davis with six blocks.

The third period saw both teams enter foul trouble and head to the line multiple times.

It was the Tigers poor free throw percentage of 59% (16/27) that opened the door for the Giants.

In the final two minutes of the game the Tigers converted just one out of four free throws allowing the Giants to draw level.

Davis (29 points, 11 rebounds) combined with Robert Kampman (25 points, 7 rebounds) to bounce back and steal the game.

The win was an important one for the Tigers heading into the finals claiming eighth position on the ladder ahead of the Giants only on percentage.

There were positive signs for the Giants as a team shooting at 80% for free throws and Ty Harrelson (26 points, 10 rebounds) and Dwayne Radcliffe (20 points, 11 rebounds) top scoring and placing great defensive pressure on the Tigers.

With the Tigers and Giants sitting at 8th and 9th on the ladder respectively each game will be important in what is shaping up to be at fascinating run towards the finals.

The Tigers play Perth Redbacks at home next Saturday while the Goldfields Giants return home to take on the People's Choice East Perth Eagles.
