Lakeside keep top four hopes alive (Round 18 women's wrap)

Lakeside Lightning caused a big upset in week eighteen of the women’s state basketball league, taking down top of the ladder South West Slammers 74-67 on Friday night.

Emily Fielding led the way for Lakeside with 17 points and ten rebounds while Claire Johnson provided support with 16 points in the upset win.

Forwards Valerie Ogoke (18 points, 16 rebounds) and Zoe Harper (17 points, 12 rebounds) fought hard for the Slammers in the absence of star import Kim Sitzman who is recovering from an ankle injury.

The Lightning went on to take down the Stirling Senators 58-52 on Saturday night for their third consecutive victory which saw them jump from seventh to fifth on the ladder.

Lightning Import Jessica Seyler finished with a solid double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds, while team mate Courtney Byrnes had her own double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Rockingham Flames extended their winning streak to ten games after back to back victories, taking down the Mandurah Magic 78-59 on Friday night and the Perth Redbacks 86-60 on Saturday.

On Friday night the Flames were led by dominant import Emma Cannon who finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds, for the Magic forward Tarsha Fletcher finished with 13 points and 9 rebounds.

Saturday saw the Redbacks continue to struggle without centre Marita Payne and guard Rachel Watman as Kaye Tucker dominated for the Flames with 35 points and eight rebounds.

The second place Willetton Tigers secured their fifth consecutive win after taking down the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 71-54 on Saturday night, the loss dropping Kalamunda down to sixth place.

Jasmine Hooper continued her solid form for the Tigers amassing 25 points while Lizel Buckley was the best for the Eastern Suns with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Wanneroo Wolves continue to regain their confidence and are now on a three game winning streak after taking down the Perry Lakes Hawks 69-53 on Saturday night.

Meghan D'Arcy (16 points) and Shani Amos (14 points) top scored for the Wolves in the victory which saw Wanneroo jump back into the top four.

East Perth Eagles had a comfortable 83-57 on Saturday night against the Mandurah Magic, last years grand finalists were led by Kate Fielding and Kelsey Maffin who both had 18 points each.
